Vestige is a group of mercenary hackers that specialize in ‘hacking back’. They’re often hired by organizations and corporations to take out other hackers. They consider themselves digital detectives, experts in tracing digital footprints across an illegally accessed server, decrypting files held by ransomware, and teasing out the identity of hackers who thought they’d covered their tracks. They’re driven not just by monetary gains, but by a desire to prove that they are the best at what they do. Finding exceptional hackers and taking them out only adds fuel to their fire, proving to themselves that they are excellence in action.

Primarily they’re funded by the exceptionally high price tag for their services. Only Fortune 500 companies or major government officials are typically able to afford them. If they find themselves short on liquid assets, they will discreetly hack a major bank (or multiple). Typically, the banks don’t notice the hack- and if they do, it usually winds up attributed to a different hacker that Vestige had taken down.

Vestige operates as a centralized organization, with all major decisions coming back to their founder and his second in command. While this structure doesn’t afford much in the way of flexibility, their founder is unwilling to distribute control outside of his most trusted allies.

Vestige operates in stealth, so their largest protection against attacks is to not be spotted in the first place. Their servers are very difficult to find, bought under false identities and registered under a series of shell corporations. Their server farms could be located anywhere on the planet. The servers themselves are encrypted in multiple layers, protected by a variety of firewalls, and will actively attempt to locate any unknown attacker. Vestige has been known to use the rough geolocating their server is able to produce during attacks to attempt to shut down power grids of entire cities to stop an attack.
